The full picture

Attendance Allowance is a weekly payment for people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision to stay safe. It is not means-tested — savings and income do not affect entitlement. Rates depend on whether help is needed during the day, at night, or both. You can use the money however you like: paying for a carer, grab rails, taxi fares, a cleaner, or anything else that helps you keep your independence. Applying does not affect other benefits, and in many cases it unlocks a higher Pension Credit or Council Tax Reduction.

Worth knowing before you apply

  • Not available in Scotland — see Pension Age Disability Payment instead
  • You must have needed help for at least 6 months before claiming (terminal illness rules are different)
  • Does not depend on savings or income
  • Rates usually change on the first Monday in April each year

How to claim

Fill in form AA1A by post (or ask for a pack by phone) or apply online at gov.uk. Decisions typically arrive in 8–12 weeks. Award is usually backdated to the date of application.
