Who it helps

Anyone whose disability or condition makes parking close to the destination essential — physical mobility issues, registered blind, hidden disabilities including dementia, autism, severe anxiety or learning difficulties.

The full picture

A Blue Badge is the UK's disabled parking permit. It's issued to people whose mobility or hidden disabilities make travel difficult — physical conditions affecting walking, learning disabilities causing distress when travelling, or hidden conditions like dementia, autism or PTSD where parking close to the destination is essential.

What the badge gives you: - Free parking in disabled bays - Up to 3 hours on single/double yellow lines (where no other restriction applies) - Free parking in most council pay-and-display car parks (varies by council) - Discounted or free London Congestion Charge for the badge holder - The same badge works UK-wide — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland

The badge belongs to the person, not the car. Anyone driving them can use it as long as the badge holder is in the vehicle. Misuse (using a friend's badge while they're not with you) is a criminal offence carrying a fine up to £1,000 and badge withdrawal.

Automatic eligibility ("without further assessment") if you receive any of: - Higher Rate Mobility Component of DLA - 8+ points on the PIP "moving around" activity - War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement - Are registered blind / severely sight impaired - Receive an Armed Forces Independence Payment

For everyone else, the council assesses on functional difficulty walking or hidden disability impact. Hidden disabilities (dementia, autism, severe anxiety, learning disabilities) have been eligible since 2019 — emphasise the functional impact, not just the diagnosis.

Worth knowing before you apply

  • Cost is £10 in England and Wales, £20 in Scotland, free in Northern Ireland
  • Renewal required every 3 years
  • The badge is for the person, not the vehicle — but the person must be in the vehicle when it's used

  • Hidden disabilities (dementia, autism, severe anxiety, learning disabilities) have been eligible since 2019
  • For automatic eligibility you need higher-rate DLA mobility, 8+ PIP mobility points, registered-blind status, AFIP, or War Pensioners Mobility Supplement
  • Decisions can take up to 12 weeks — apply 12 weeks before any planned trip if you don't qualify automatically
  • Free parking on single/double yellow lines is for up to 3 hours and only where no other restriction applies — read the signs
