The full picture

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a non-means-tested benefit for adults of working age with a long-term health condition or disability. It's scored across 12 activities: 10 for daily living (like preparing food, washing, taking medication, engaging with others) and 2 for mobility (planning journeys, moving around). The Department for Work and Pensions decides your rate based on how much help you need. You can get either component or both. Many PIP decisions are overturned on appeal — if you're turned down, a welfare adviser can help you challenge the decision. For a precise estimate, Turn2us' calculator is excellent; our check is a rough guide only.

Worth knowing before you apply

  • Not available in Scotland — see Adult Disability Payment instead
  • Not means-tested — savings and income do not affect entitlement
  • Our check is a guide only — a welfare adviser or the DWP assessment makes the decision
  • Many initial refusals are overturned on appeal — don't give up if you get a no first

How to claim

Start the claim by phoning the DWP PIP claim line; they send you a PIP2 form to complete. Decisions take several months and usually include a face-to-face or telephone assessment.
