Who it helps

Households on Pension Credit or low-income means-tested benefits whose home electricity (or gas) costs are estimated as higher than average. Eligibility is largely automatic in England and Wales; Scotland and NI have separate processes.

The full picture

The Warm Home Discount is a one-off £150 reduction on a household's electricity bill (or gas if it's the main heating fuel) for the winter. It runs October to March each year and is paid by the energy supplier as a credit on the bill.

There are two qualifying routes:

**Core Group 1** — automatic, no application needed: - You receive the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit on the qualifying day (usually the third Sunday in August) - You're named on the energy account or your partner is

**Core Group 2 (Broader Group)** — automatic in England/Wales since 2022: - Your household's estimated energy costs are higher than average - You receive a qualifying means-tested benefit (Universal Credit, income-based JSA / ESA, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Tax Credits) - DWP and the energy supplier check eligibility automatically

In Scotland, Core Group 2 still requires an application through the energy supplier — the rules diverge from England/Wales here.

Northern Ireland runs its own scheme called Affordable Warmth, with similar £150 support but a different application process via the local council.

You'll receive a letter in October/November confirming eligibility, and the credit is applied between then and March. If you don't receive a letter but think you're eligible, contact the Warm Home Discount Helpline on 0800 731 0214 (England/Wales) or your supplier.

Worth knowing before you apply

  • Worth £150 — applied as a credit on the electricity bill, not paid in cash
  • Automatic for most Pension Credit Guarantee Credit recipients (England/Wales)
  • Scotland Broader Group still requires you to apply via your energy supplier — limited annual budget per supplier, apply early
  • Northern Ireland uses the Affordable Warmth Scheme — apply via your local council
  • You must be the named account holder (or your partner must) on the qualifying day
  • Some smaller suppliers don't participate — check yours is on the GOV.UK list before switching
  • Doesn't affect Pension Credit, UC or other means-tested benefits — it's a bill credit, not income
  • Stack with Cold Weather Payment / Winter Heating Payment and Winter Fuel Payment for combined seasonal support

How to claim

England/Wales Core Group 1 (Pension Credit Guarantee Credit): automatic — you'll get a letter in autumn confirming the discount. England/Wales Core Group 2: automatic check — DWP and the supplier work it out. If you don't hear by mid-December, call your supplier. Scotland Broader Group: apply directly to your energy supplier. Each supplier has its own form and budget — apply early in the year. Northern Ireland: apply for Affordable Warmth via your local council on the nidirect website.
