Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off annual payment toward energy bills for older people. It's paid in November or December and shows on bank statements as "DWP Winter Fuel".
Who gets it (England, Wales, Northern Ireland): - You're over State Pension age (66+ in 2026) - You receive Pension Credit, Universal Credit, income-based JSA or income-based ESA, Income Support, or certain Tax Credits during the qualifying week (typically the third week of September)
The means test was introduced in 2024 — before that, every pensioner got it automatically. If you're on Pension Credit, the payment is automatic. If not, claiming Pension Credit (even successfully for a small amount) often unlocks the Winter Fuel Payment alongside the rest of the Pension Credit passport benefits.
Amount: - £200 if everyone in the household is under 80 - £300 if anyone in the household is 80 or over
Scotland: Use Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead — same idea, run by Social Security Scotland and worth £203.40 (under 80) or £305.10 (80+) for 2025–26. The Scottish payment was universal in 2024–25 but is now means-tested to match the Westminster scheme.
If you don't receive Pension Credit and think you should, applying for it before the qualifying week can secure both Pension Credit AND the Winter Fuel Payment for the year. Backdating Pension Credit by 3 months is sometimes possible.
