Who it helps

Anyone in Great Britain receiving a qualifying disability benefit (PIP, DLA, AA, ADP, PADP, CDP, SDA, AFIP, War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement) or registered as visually impaired / hard of hearing / with epilepsy.

The full picture

The Disabled Persons Railcard saves 1/3 off most adult rail fares across Great Britain — for both the cardholder AND a travelling companion. It works on Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares (some Advance restrictions on TOC by TOC basis).

Cost (April 2026 prices): - £20 for 1 year - £54 for 3 years (3-year saves £6)

Which tickets the discount applies to: - Anytime tickets — full 1/3 off - Off-Peak tickets — full 1/3 off - Advance tickets — discount applies but availability is limited - Sleeper services — 1/3 off the rail fare element - London Overground, Caledonian Sleeper, GB Eurostar — 1/3 off

Who qualifies — receive any of: - PIP (any rate, daily living or mobility) - DLA (any rate, care or mobility) - Adult Disability Payment (Scotland) - Child Disability Payment (Scotland) - Attendance Allowance / Pension Age Disability Payment - Severe Disablement Allowance - War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement / Constant Attendance Allowance - Armed Forces Independence Payment - Registered visually impaired or hard of hearing (with proof from the local authority) - Have epilepsy and have had seizures recently OR take anti-convulsant medication - Have a vehicle exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty due to disability

The card is widely accepted but doesn't cover London Underground, buses or trams (different schemes for those).

Worth knowing before you apply

  • £20 for 1 year, £54 for 3 years — pays for itself in 2–3 return journeys
  • 1/3 off both the cardholder's and a companion's fare (companion fare can't be cheaper than 1/3 off)
  • Available across Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales) — Northern Ireland uses Translink's separate concession scheme
  • Doesn't cover London Underground, buses or trams — separate concessionary schemes for those
  • Children get a 60% discount on their fares with the cardholder
  • Photo and proof-of-benefit needed at application — DWP / Social Security Scotland award letter or registration certificate
  • Apply 14 days before you need to travel to allow for delivery
  • Stack with London Freedom Pass / Older Person's Concessionary Bus Pass / Senior Railcard depending on age and location

How to claim

Apply on disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk. You'll need proof of the qualifying benefit (latest award letter or DWP letter dated within the last 12 months) plus a photo. Cards arrive within 5 working days. Northern Ireland uses a different scheme — see Translink for the local rail concession.
